The Algarve boasts a fantastic year round climate, with over 3000 hours of sunshine a year on average, that’s more than California! It even manages to stay rain free for 315 days and when it does rain the coastal area’s only average 2 inches a year.

The proximity of the Mediterranean Sea greatly influences the Algarvian climate. Despite being on the Atlantic coast, the Algarve has a Mediterranean-like climate with mild winters and long hot summers.  The maximum temperatures in the Algarve fluctuate between 15°C and 35 °C, with the temperature never falling below zero in the winter months.

Summer

June to September tend to be the hottest months and the chances of rain are almost zero. June and September temperatures are usually around the mid 20’s in the shade, rising to 30°C plus in the sun. July and August are the warmest months with shade temperatures that rarely drop below 30°C and could be as high as 40 in the sun. The Algarve often has the benefit of a sea breeze, and whilst the temperatures can be quite high it never seems to feel that hot with a breeze on the beach

Autumn

algarve weather

October and November are usually lovely months being just a little cooler than the height of summer, but with temperatures in the low to mid 20's in the shade and from 20°C to 30°C in the sun. It's still very warm. It's not at all unusual to spot people sunbathing on the algarve beaches in the Autumn.

Winter

December to February are normally the coolest months of the year, air temperatures average between 9°C and 16°C but temperatures in the sun can be the low 20's. Night temperatures tend to drop to between 4°C and 6°C and it does rain from time to time, but on the whole it’s like Spring in the English countryside.  In January and February the almond trees can be seen in blossom and the wild flowers are starting to appear.

Spring

Algarvian temperatures in March and April normally rise to around 18°C to 20°C in the shade and it’s not unusual to see temperatures in the sun in between the mid 20’s up as high as 30°C. May can be mistaken for summer with temperatures in the sun around 28°C and low 20’s in the shade. This time of year sees the countryside burst into bloom with the cliff tops in the western Algarve being particularly beautiful.
