For those visitors that like to explore, the Algarve has much to offer. The Algarve is steeped in history, there are many towns easily reached by car, and some by boat, that will satisfy your desire to learn about days gone by and local customs. Those of you that just can't resist shopping will find a wealth of temptation at the retail park in Guia or the cobbled streets of Portimao.

Portimao

Portimao is the biggest town in the western Algarve and sits on the bank of the Arade river facing Ferragudo on the opposite bank. The town centre is simply perfect for those who love to shop! It full of shops, offering a wide choice of clothes, gifts, souvenirs, electrical goods and general household items. You’ll see brands you see at home, such as Mango for the ladies and plenty of traditional shops selling bargain leather goods, such as handbags and belts.

There are also plenty of bars, restaurants and café’s where you can sit for a bite to eat or a drink and watch the town carry on around you. To see the more relaxed side of Portimão, wander down to the river front, where the 'Manuel Bivar' gardens are, and have an ice-cream or a coffee at one of the cafe's along the front. You will also find Portimão's famous fish restaurants at the end of the waterfront near the bridge - just follow the aroma of sardines barbecuing!

Silves

Silves is the perfect place to visit - very relaxed with history in abundance! Although the castle sits on the hill, it is still right in the heart of Silves, with  the Cathedral right next door and cafés and houses around and in between. There are some boat trips from Portimão to Silves along the Rio Arade, which give a short time (just over an hour) in Silves before returning whilst the tide is still high enough for the boats to make the return journey.

Lagos

A popular tourist destination, Lagos is a bustling town full of activity, nightlife and modern attractions; however, it is also a town full of history with monuments and an impressive natural harbour. Lagos has a number of beautiful beaches to choose from.

Sagres

Sagres is the most southwesterly resort Europe. In Roman times it was believed to be the most westerly part of the world and it was thought that the setting sun off the point made the waters of the ocean boil. It is still relatively untouched by tourism and is an attractive town of mainly low rise houses, lining the quiet streets. Because of its location people often expect a wind-swept barren landscape, but Sagres is a tranquil town with beautiful beaches, a picturesque harbour at Baleeira, a pretty square, and stunning views.

Tavira

Tavira is an attractive town with some lovely, quite grand, buildings reflecting it's wealthy past. There are rows of Portuguese 'town' houses with tiled fronts along narrow cobbled streets; shops to browse in; pretty gardens and squares to sit in and, of course, plenty of restaurants and cafes for refreshments!

Monchique

Monchique is a market town up in the Serra de Monchique, which is a thickly wooded mountain range separating the Algarve from Alentejo. The journey up (and down) to Monchique offers spectacular views. The centre of Monchique is characterised by lots of narrow cobbled streets criss-crossing up the hillside with a spattering of cafes and  restaurants. The central square boasts an attractive paved area with benches, trees and water feature. Monchique is a very quiet and relaxed place, which is ideal for pottering around and appreciating the fantastic views
